Celtics working on 'gigantic' trade for $287 million star duo, per report

The Boston Celtics clearly don’t want to endure another first-round postseason exit in 2026-27.

How is it so obvious? According to a report from NBA insider Evan Sidery, the Jayson Tatum-led Eastern Conference franchise is working on a blockbuster offseason that would land them two contributors who have earned the star label in the big leagues.

“The Celtics are trying to pull off acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo and Trey Murphy III in a gigantic blockbuster framework,” Sidery wrote on X/twitter Friday.

“Boston has reached out to the Pelicans to gauge interest on Jaylen Brown and/or Derrick White. Murphy’s $27 million salary slides right into Boston’s TPE.”

The Celtics’ return in a potential trade centered on Brown and/or White would be monumental based on Sidery’s report, to say the least.

Of course, we all know what Antetokounmpo brings to the table, as the 6-foot-11 Milwaukee Bucks star's awe-inspiring acceleration in rim-running situations, top-tier contact balance, game-changing length, and ball-tracking ability are well-documented.

Pairing Antetokounmpo with an ascending two-way New Orleans Pelicans stud in Murphy would do wonders for Boston, as it would provide them with the perimeter/interior defense, floor-spacing (from Murphy), and off-the-dribble playmaking needed to help Tatum and the Celtics flourish on both ends moving forward.

Antetokounmpo averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 0.9 steals per game this season (62.4% field goal shooting percentage), while Murphy contributed 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.5 steals per contest (47.0% field goal shooting and 37.9% three-point shooting).

Needless to say, Sidery’s report is encouraging news for the Celtics.
