As Portugal plays its first game of the knockout stage, all eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 41-year-old is playing in a record sixth World Cup, but he hasn't made it as far as the semifinals since his first World Cup in 2006. In fact, only twice with Ronaldo has Portugal even won a knockout-stage match, as the team ended the drought in 2022 with a quarterfinal appearance.

Portugal's underwhelming group stage this year resulted in two draws and a difficult path through the World Cup bracket. First up in the round of 32 is Croatia, the 2018 runner-up that won the third-place match just four years ago.

For Portugal to solve Croatia, it will need Ronaldo to be at his best. Thus far in the World Cup, Ronaldo has two goals, both of which came in a 5-0 blowout against Uzbekistan, but the team scored just once combined in the other two group-stage matches. At this point, every match could be Ronaldo's last in his World Cup career, as it's unclear if he will participate in the 2030 tournament at 45 years old. Therefore, he will certainly be looking for a big game on Thursday night.
