Diamond Miller faces increased WNBA punishment after physical Caitlin Clark incident

Diamond Miller’s physical exchange with Caitlin Clark during the Indiana Fever’s blowout victory over the Connecticut Sun will cost the veteran forward.

Miller received her fourth technical foul of the 2026 season during Indiana’s 123-88 win Wednesday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Under the WNBA’s technical foul rules, Miller is now facing a $1,000 fine. The incident came during a heated game that included multiple technical and flagrant fouls. While the Sun attempted to frustrate Clark and the Fever with physical defense, Indiana delivered its response on the scoreboard.

Clark finished with 27 points and 11 assists, leading the Fever to their third consecutive win and a 16-10 record entering the WNBA All-Star break.

The confrontation occurred midway through the third quarter as Miller guarded Clark closely. Miller held and pulled at Clark while attempting to disrupt the Fever guard. The physical play continued during a dead-ball situation when Miller appeared to make another attempt at the ball and moved toward Clark after the whistle.

Officials quickly intervened and assessed Miller a technical foul. The exchange added to an already frustrating night for Connecticut. Clark shot 8-of-13 from the field and made five of her nine 3-point attempts. Indiana scored 123 points and led by as many as 35 before completing the rout.

Miller’s technical was her fourth of the season, which increases the financial penalty she will receive. According to WNBA rules, each of a player’s first three technical fouls results in a $500 fine. Technical fouls No. 4 through No. 7 carry a $1,000 fine.

A player is automatically suspended for one game after receiving an eighth technical foul. That eighth technical also comes with a $1,500 fine. Miller is not yet in immediate danger of a suspension, but Wednesday’s incident moved her closer to the threshold.

Miller was not the only player whose technical-foul total increased during the physical matchup. Later in the third quarter, Clark and Sun guard Saniya Rivers received double technical fouls after exchanging words. Clark pointed toward the scoreboard during the confrontation, with Indiana holding a commanding 95-67 lead at the time.

Clark later explained that Rivers claimed she was “locking” the Fever star up. Clark responded by directing her attention toward the score. The technical was Clark’s seventh of the season, putting her one away from an automatic one-game suspension.

That is a much more immediate concern for Indiana. Clark is the engine of the Fever’s offense, and her production against Connecticut offered another reminder of how much the team relies on her.

Kelsey Mitchell added 23 points in the win, while Aliyah Boston contributed 22 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Indiana shot efficiently throughout the night and overwhelmed Connecticut with one of its best offensive performances of the season.

The Fever will enter the break tied at the top of the Eastern Conference standings after winning three straight games. Clark is averaging 15.4 points and 11.5 assists per game, and Indiana has started to look like a serious postseason threat.

Wednesday’s game showed that opposing teams will continue trying to make Clark uncomfortable with physical play. Miller’s approach only resulted in a technical foul, an increased fine and another dominant Fever win.
