LeBron James was originally expected to be the biggest storyline of the summer, but it has instead turned into one of the most trade-heavy offseasons in recent memory. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kawhi Leonard, and now Jaylen Brown have all been involved in major moves.
Brown was previously mentioned in trade discussions involving Antetokounmpo and the Boston Celtics. That reportedly strained his relationship with the organization, ultimately leading to him being traded Wednesday to the Philadelphia 76ers.
“Jaylen Brown has a new home, as the Boston Celtics agreed to send the former NBA Finals MVP to the Philadelphia 76ers in a blockbuster trade Wednesday, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania. The 76ers are sending Paul George, two first-round picks (2028, 2031) and two second-round selections (2028, 2030) to Boston to complete the deal, sources said,” ESPN wrote.
Even with all the blockbuster moves taking place, James remains the biggest question mark of the summer. He is set to join a new team after already informing the Lakers that he will not return.
“LeBron James will return for an unprecedented 24th season in the NBA -- but it won't be with the Los Angeles Lakers. James has informed the Lakers that the franchise can move on without him because he will play elsewhere, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania on Tuesday,” ESPN wrote.
NBA reporters have labeled the 76ers as an “ideal” destination for James following their acquisition of Brown. The potential starting lineup would be star-studded on paper.
“The Sixers now have a golden opportunity to recruit LeBron James to form a truly lethal starting lineup: Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron, and Joel Embiid. On paper, it seems like an ideal LeBron destination after that trade,” Sidery posted.
Without James, the 76ers already have an NBA Finals-caliber roster if they can stay healthy. Adding the four-time NBA champion would immediately make them the clear favorites in the Eastern Conference.
James is reportedly listening to offers from teams across the league, but this situation may now be the most appealing option. The amount of floor spacing the starting five would create would be a nightmare for opposing defenses to match up against.
