How good is Folarin Balogun? What to know about club soccer career in France's Ligue 1

1 hour ago 4

Folarin Balogun has been one of the breakout stars of the 2026 World Cup, his goals helping to fire the United States to the Round of 16.

The 25-year-old was named player of the match after two goals in the opening 4-1 group win over Paraguay.

Despite not finding the target in the 2-0 win over Australia that secured knockout qualification, Balogun sealed back-to-back awards as the best performer on the pitch.

He then netted the key opening goal in the 2-0 Round of 32 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina, only for a red card controversy — and FIFA's remarkable decision to suspend Balogun's one-match ban for the last-16 game against Belgium — to dominate the subsequent narrative.

Nevertheless, Balogun has underlined his status as one of the USMNT's premier stars and is even getting namechecked at President Donald Trump's press conferences.

But where does this put him in the global pantheon? Soccer's best are largely judged on their performances outside of national-team play. Here's how Balogun's record in European soccer stacks up.

Where does Folarin Balogun play club soccer?

Balogun plays for Monaco in France's top division, Ligue 1.

He came through the youth ranks at Arsenal and made 10 senior appearances for the current Premier League champions, scoring twice in Europa League matches.

A loan spell at Middlesbrough in 2022 was followed by a season-long stint at Ligue 1 club Reims, which proved to be Balogun's breakthrough in 2022/23.

He scored 21 goals in 37 league matches, putting European and particularly French soccer on notice.

On August 30, 2023, he joined Monaco from Arsenal on a five-year contract for an initial €30 million ($32.5 million).

Form and fitness struggles disrupted Balogun's first two seasons in the principality, but 13 goals in 30 Ligue 1 appearances in 2025/26, along with five in 10 Champions League outings, tuned him up nicely for the World Cup.

How good is Ligue 1 in France?

Ligue 1 is considered one of the 'big five' European leagues alongside England's Premier League, Spain's La Liga, Italy's Serie A and Germany's Bundesliga.

These are the domestic competitions where the vast majority of the premier players in the world are found. Any player outside of the big five who impresses at the World Cup will likely hope those performances secure a transfer to this leading tier of the European club game.

France has also supplied the Champions League winners in each of the past two seasons, with Paris Saint-Germain going back-to-back.

But PSG are also responsible for the main caveat in Ligue 1. Since the capital club's takeover by Qatar Sport Investments in June 2011, Ligue 1 has been overwhelmingly dominated by PSG.

Where several Premier League clubs will harbour hopes of winning the title at the start of every season, Ligue 1 is largely expected to be a procession in PSG's favor.

Since PSG's first title of the Qatari era in 2012/13, Monaco are one of only two clubs to have stopped them winning Ligue 1. Kylian Mbappe was Monaco's star player in their triumphant 2016/17 campaign, and PSG responded by signing him, along with Barcelona star Neymar, in the summer of 2017.

Still, Monaco are regulars among the main teams chasing PSG and Champions League qualification is generally their expectation. However, a seventh-place finish in 2025/26 means they will compete in the Conference League next term.

Folarin Balogun transfer rumors

To circle back to the earlier observation of PSG's dominance in France, Foot Mercato linked Balogun with a move to the Parc des Princes as a replacement for Portugal striker Goncalo Ramos, who recently joined AC Milan.

Balogun grew up in London and Arsenal's Premier League rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, both of whom lacked in the centre-forward position last season, have been credited with an interest.

Arsenal themselves are unlikely to be in the race, with the Evening Standard reporting that the Gunners did not insert a buy-back clause in the deal that took Balogun to Monaco in 2023.
