The Golden State Valkyries are in Washington for Monday night's matchup against the Mystics, but before tipoff, one player received a special spotlight from her team.
Guard Kaila Charles returned to familiar territory as the Maryland native prepared to play in front of family and friends, and the Valkyries made sure to celebrate the occasion. The team's official social media account shared photos of Charles arriving at the arena, calling her "D.C.'s own" while showing off her game-day outfit ahead of the homecoming.
The stylish arrival quickly caught fans' attention as Golden State continues one of the most surprising seasons in the WNBA.
Valkyries celebrate Kaila Charles' return home
The Valkyries' social media team embraced the moment before Monday's game, posting photos of Charles with the caption:
"D.C.'s own 💜 @_kailacharles' homecoming fit check looks GOOOOOD."
The post generated plenty of reactions from fans excited to see the 28-year-old return to the area where her basketball journey began. Charles was born in nearby Glenn Dale, Maryland, and established herself as one of the nation's top high school prospects before committing to the University of Maryland.

Charles has become an important piece for Golden State
After beginning her WNBA career with the Connecticut Sun, Charles spent time with the Atlanta Dream, Seattle Storm and Dallas Wings before finding a home with the expansion Valkyries. Golden State initially signed Charles to a hardship contract during the 2025 season before rewarding her strong play with a rest-of-season contract. Earlier this year, the franchise doubled down on its commitment by signing her to a two-year deal.
The veteran wing has rewarded that confidence. Through 21 games this season, Charles is averaging 5.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists while providing the defensive versatility and energy that have helped Golden State exceed expectations in its inaugural campaign.
She also enters Monday's contest fresh off one of her best all-around performances of the season, finishing with seven points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals in Saturday's 88-83 victory over the Atlanta Dream.
Homecoming comes during Valkyries' impressive run
The timing couldn't be much better for Charles. Golden State arrives in Washington riding a four-game winning streak and sitting at 14-7, good for third place in the Western Conference as the expansion franchise continues to establish itself as one of the WNBA's biggest surprises.
Monday's matchup allows Charles to play close to home once again while helping the Valkyries continue their impressive run. Before the opening tip, though, it was her game-day style, and the warm welcome from her team, that had everyone talking.
