Kevin Durant explains why Philadelphia fans 'fear you a little bit'

1 hour ago 2

Philly's NBA mood is loud right now. The Sixers just landed Jaylen Brown in a blockbuster trade, and fans are already picturing him next to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

On top of that, LeBron James is a free agent, and rumors are swirling that he might move East. So, the city hasn't stopped talking about hoops all summer.

Houston Rockets forward Kevin Durant recently walked right into that intense environment. He was in town on Tuesday for the MLB All-Star Game and ended up chatting courtside with John Clark from NBC Sports Philadelphia. Naturally, their conversation started with the legendary passion of the Philly crowd.

"Philly fans, man, they got the most passion," Durant said. "I think everyone on the East Coast is pretty passionate, from New York, Boston, Philly, usually those three are the most radical fans when it comes to being loud at the ballpark or the arena."

“Dangerous”

That reputation matches KD's own history in the city. He has had plenty of heated moments with 76ers crowds over the years and has never been shy about firing back at hecklers on the road or on social media. So when Clark asked if he likes trading barbs with Philly fans, Durant didn't hesitate.

"Yeah, sometimes, it's all in good fun," Durant said. "It's respect, because when they start talking to you, that means they respect you, you know. They fear you a little bit. So you can hear it in their voice, the ones that respect you and the ones that don't. It all tips on that line of respect for me. So it's all cool, it's a fun exchange."

Durant didn't stop at the fans. He also weighed in on Brown's blockbuster trade to Philadelphia, calling the Sixers' new lineup "dangerous, dangerous" and predicting the fan base will love him.

When the moment came to talk about LeBron James hitting free agency, KD admitted he has absolutely no inside scoop: "I have no clue. Wherever he goes, he's going to ball out."

For a city that treats trash talk as a love language, Durant's response is the ultimate validation. The noise is exactly the point and he welcomes it, especially as his Rockets look to bounce back from last season's disappointing first-round playoff exit.
