Malik Tillman becomes first player to score two free-kicks in a World Cup in 40 years

Mark Tillman is quickly becoming a household name in the United States.

The young midfielder scored the USMNT's first goal on Monday, an equaliser that tied the game at 1-1 in the first half. It was his second goal of the tournament and, like his strike against Bosnia and Herzegovina, came from a free-kick attempt.

As a result, Tillman became just the second player ever to score two goals from free kicks in the same World Cup, joining Bernard Genghini in 1982.

Tillman now has two goals in the World Cup for the United States. First, Tillman scored on a free kick vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina to cement the USMNT win in the Round of 32.

Besides at the World Cup, Tillman also scored three times for the USMNT at the 2025 Gold Cup: Twice against Trinidad and Tobago and once against Haiti.

Who does Malik Tillman play club for?

Tillman plays for Bayer Leverkusen in Germany's Bundesliga. The 24-year-old was born in Germany and has spent much of his career in the country, either training or playing for a club.

Tillman began his career in the Bayern Munich system, where he spent seven seasons before moving to Scotland. He also spent a few years in the Netherlands before returning to Germany this past season to play for Leverkusen.

How many goals does Malik Tillman for club and country?

Tillman began playing for the United States as a teenager in 2022, but he didn't score his first goal until 2025, when he scored three in the Gold Cup. Now that he has two more in the World Cup, Tillman has totaled five career goals for the USMNT.

In his professional career, though, Tillman has 42 goals in 126 matches. This past season, Tillman scored six goals for Bayer Leverkusen, but he did score 12 a season prior for PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands.
