The Dallas Mavericks made one of the biggest moves of the offseason on Tuesday, agreeing to send Khris Middleton to the Washington Wizards via a sign-and-trade as part of a massive six-team transaction. The complex deal also involves the Los Angeles Clippers, Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks, and Memphis Grizzlies.
Despite being involved in such a complicated deal, Dallas has managed to preserve nearly all of its financial flexibility heading into the remainder of free agency.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported on X that the Mavericks successfully structured the trade in a way that allows them to strengthen their roster without sacrificing their most valuable spending tools.
“By helping Khris Middleton get to Washington via sign-and-trade, Dallas can acquire Santi Aldama and Marcus Sasser without touching its $20.3M TPE from the Anthony Davis trade or its $15M MLE. The Mavs can then formally sign Tarik Biberović after the six-team trade is official,” Stein reported.
Another important aspect of the transaction is the way Dallas handled Marcus Sasser's acquisition. Because the Mavericks created and utilized a temporary salary exception specifically for Sasser, the franchise's two primary avenues for adding another high-level contributor remain completely intact.
Meanwhile, Tarik Biberovic has already informed Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce that he intends to leave the EuroLeague and begin his NBA career. Since his draft rights are being transferred to Dallas as part of the six-team agreement, the Mavericks must wait until the NBA league office officially processes all of the trade's paperwork before they can complete his signing.
Despite all those moves, the Mavericks are still projected to remain approximately $20.6 million below the NBA's First Apron salary threshold. That financial cushion gives Dallas considerable flexibility moving forward. It allows the franchise to utilize either its full Mid-Level Exception or the sizable AD traded player exception later this summer if another opportunity to add impact talent becomes available.
