The New York Mets are sure to be trade deadline sellers this summer, and almost everyone aside from a few youngsters and Juan Soto is potentially on the trade block.
With how bad the team has played this season, a full-scale teardown, while not ideal, could actually happen. If it does, one player to keep an eye on is infielder Bo Bichette.
While there could be interested teams, like the Toronto Blue Jays, there is one glaring issue. As ESPN's Jorge Castillo noted, the Mets have a "complicated" $42 million problem with a Bichette trade this summer.
Mets have $42M Bo Bichette problem with potential trade
"Bo Bichette also has a player option for 2027, but it's for $42 million, and he has a full no-trade clause," Castillo writes. "That price tag means there's a good chance he picks up the option, which complicates his value on the trade market."
The Mets might want to trade Bichette and a lot of their other players this summer at the trade deadline, but there's a bit of a problem with the former Blue Jays star.
Unlike Freddy Peralta, A.J. Minter, and Brooks Raley, all of whom are hitting free agency after 2026, Bichette's future is uncertain.
He has a player option for 2027 and 2028, which means he could be a rental, or he could be a multi-year option for an acquiring team. That alone will complicate his trade value.

But the further complication is that he can make $42 million in 2026. If he were playing at an All-Star level, that wouldn't be the worst thing. But, he's been far below that.
So far in 2026, Bichette is hitting .253 with a .670 OPS, 86 OPS+, and 0.0 bWAR on the season. For someone making $42 million in one season, that production is well below what is needed to make it a worthwhile contract.
This $42 million player option is a problem for the Mets and will complicate their trade conversations on the former Blue Jays All-Star.
This option alone probably makes it so Bichette isn't moved, barring some major change in Bichette's plan, or what the Mets are asking for in a deal.
