Mets face tough 2027 Luke Weaver decision before MLB trade deadline

The New York Mets are in a tricky spot with reliever Luke Weaver.

The right-hander has a year of control past 2026, but he's having a dominant season out of the bullpen.

Would it make more sense for the Mets to trade him now, rather than wait until next season? Weaver's value may never be higher.

"The Mets could easily talk themselves into keeping Weaver," The Athletic's Tim Britton wrote. "He’s under control for 2027 at a relatively affordable price, he’s been lights out for them this year, and he’s shown an ability to handle New York and the closer’s role when needed."

Weaver has been pitching at an All-Star level despite being left off the NL's Midsummer Classic roster.

The 32-year-old has a 1.93 ERA with 43 strikeouts and just 11 walks in 42 innings. After recording a career-high eight saves with the New York Yankees in 2025, Weaver has one in his setup man role with the Mets.

Weaver has high trade value

"But those things also make him appealing in a market that could potentially lack high-end, late-game relievers," Britton added.

"If the Red Sox, Astros and Padres decide against dealing their closers, Weaver might be as desired as any reliever on the market," he wrote. "That will be tough for the Mets to turn down."

Other teams may flock to the Mets if closers like Aroldis Chapman and Josh Hader are unavailable, which seems likely.

If that happens, the Mets could be offered a deal they can't refuse for Weaver.
