Red Sox trade idea for Mets' 56.3 bWAR shortstop would be a no-brainer

The Boston Red Sox are in the middle of a 14-game winning streak, and very well might end up as legitimate buyers at the 2026 MLB trade deadline at this rate.

Instead of selling players like Jarren Duran, Willson Contreras, Aroldis Chapman, and many others, Boston might be buying to upgrade the roster this summer. If they are buying, upgrading their middle infield is a top priority.

With such a need in mind, Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer proposed a trade idea in which the Red Sox would land New York Mets 56.3 bWAR shortstop Francisco Lindor in a deal that would be a no-brainer for Craig Breslow to accept.

"Trade Proposal: Boston Red Sox get SS Francisco Lindor ($185.8M); New York Mets get SS Trevor Story ($39.6M), OF Jarren Duran, RHP Kyson Witherspoon (MLB No. 92)," Rymer proposed.

Landing Lindor, who has a .233 batting average and a .717 OPS with 0.8 bWAR in 45 games across 172 at-bats this season, would make a lot of sense for the Red Sox.

After getting out of the Rafael Devers contract, they have some money to play with. As the team's hot streak has them in postseason contention, adding someone like Lindor would make sense.

That's especially the case if this is the cost of a trade. Getting out of that Story contract would be a huge win and is a great starting point for the Red Sox.

Jarren Duran might've been a much more valuable commodity last season, but he's struggled in 2026, and now is a much more expendable player than before. His 2024 All-Star season seems like a far cry from his abilities in 2026.

Being able to send both of those players to the Mets for Lindor, a potential future Hall of Famer, would be incredible. Losing Witherspoon would sting, but the Red Sox have an incredible pitching staff and can afford to lose a good prospect in a wide-open AL.

This trade idea from Rymer would be a no-brainer for the Red Sox if this could become reality. It's not likely to happen at all, as the Mets probably don't trade Lindor at all, and if they do, it's more likely to come in the offseason with more suitors.

But, if the Red Sox had the opportunity to swing this trade, there should be little question for Craig Breslow to swing this deal.
