The Dallas Stars are ramping up towards making a Stanley Cup run in 2027. They were fairly close to hoisting Lord Stanley, but their hopes were cut short due to a collapse against the Minnesota Wild. Now, general manager Jim Nill is tasked with the rough challenge of keeping their core intact. The top priority? Re-signing Jason Robertson.
Stars' contract negotiations with Robertson get hazy update from Nill
A lot has been going on when it comes to Jason Robertson's contract. He recently turned down an eight-year deal from the Seattle Kraken in hopes of getting more than $15 million annually. This has put the Stars and Jim Nill in a tough spot financially.
But the Stars front office remains relentless in its pursuit of retaining one of their top goal scorers. Nill outlined that the process will be quite lengthy and that they will do everything in their power to have him on their roster once again, via Tracey Meyers of NHL.com.
"The games don’t start until September, and this is part of contract negotiations. The goal is to get him signed and, as we talked about at the draft, in the same situation," the Stars general manager declared.
Notably, the Stars cannot take more hits when it comes to their offense anymore. They just recently lost Mavrik Bourque to the Nashville Predators despite having him as a restricted free agent. Without Robertson, they will still have Wyatt Johnston, Mikko Rantanen, and Tyler Seguin to share the offensive load.
Losing the 27-year-old will sting quite a bit for the Stars. They will effectively make him walk for nothing after having just logged a team-leading 96 points through 45 goals and 51 assists in the 2025-26 NHL season.
Hopefully, the Stars can afford Robertson after his arbitration outcome while still maintaining the financial flexibility to build around him in the coming seasons.
