What happened to Owen Caissie? Why Marlins placed former Cubs prospect on IL

1 hour ago 2

The Miami Marlins will be without one of their starting outfielders until at least after the All-Star break.

It's unfortunate timing, considering how well the Marlins have been playing recently.

On Thursday, the NL East club announced that Owen Caissie was placed on the 10-day IL with a right calf strain.

"Caissie and several other Miami players have gotten hot lately and propelled the team into contender status," Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors wrote. "On June 7th, the Marlins were 31-35 and 14 games back of Atlanta in the National League East. Now they are 51-42 and only three games back."

Caissie, a former top prospect with the Chicago Cubs, exited last night's game after experiencing calf tightness in his right leg.

Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports that outfielder Rece Hinds was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville to take Caissie's spot on the roster.

In 80 games this season, Caissie is hitting .239/.297/.459 with 12 home runs, 50 RBIs, and a .755 OPS in his first season in Miami.

The right fielder has struck out in a staggering 39.0% of his plate apperances this year.

Caissie, 24, was acquired from the Cubs during the offseason in the trade that sent right-hander Edward Cabrera to Chicago.
