Why Memphis Depay isn't starting for Netherlands at the World Cup

1 hour ago 4

Memphis Depay is one of the most recognizable names for the current Netherlands national team.

But at least in their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Depay isn't playing from the start. He'll be brought off the bench.

It's not a total surprise as Depay ages, but given that he was on the squad, it seemed a decent chance he'd still start.

The Netherlands have gone a different direction for their opener against Japan, though.

Why isn't Memphis Depay starting?

Depay misses out in favor of a talented bunch of other attackers.

The 32-year old forward isn't at the top of his game anymore. He plays for Corinthians in Brazil, a long way from his days with Manchester United, Lyon, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Depay will surely play a part. He has 109 caps for the Netherlands, including 55 goals.

Since joining Corinthians, he has notched 16 goals in 58 matches, so Depay can still put the ball in the back of the net.

He just won't have a chance to do that from the start on Sunday.
