Will grudge keep Red Sox's Aroldis Chapman from rejoining Yankees?

Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman still seeks an apology.

With the Red Sox engulfed in a prolonged skid, Chapman was asked by ESPN on June 11 about a possible MLB trade deadline deal reuniting the 38-year-old with the New York Yankees.

Speaking from the heart, he said: "What happened, happened. If something like this were to happen, I believe someone from this organization should apologize first."

He hasn't received one publicly over the past few weeks and apparently Chapman would like to move on from the quote.

"They asked me a question and I answered," Chapman told the New York Post during the All-Star Game media day in Philadelphia. "I turned the page a long time ago."

Chapman spent 2016-22 with the Yankees. A rift emerged during his final season when he lost his closer's role and spent time on the injured list after a leg infection flared up following a tattoo. The future Hall of Famer was left off the playoff roster after he missed a mandatory workout, claiming he had permission.

A grudge manifested over the past three-plus seasons and it remains, despite Chapman being a popular figure on the trade block over the past few weeks.

Red Sox Closer Aroldis Chapman moving on

A nine-time All-Star, Chapman, who remains tied with Craig Kimbrel for the second-most midseason classic appearances by a reliever, unveiled a third stage to his career. He captured a World Series title with the Texas Rangers in 2023 and earned back-to-back All-Star appearances with the Red Sox.

Winners of nine straight, the Red Sox (46-48) moved into third place, 10 games behind the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox, who remain a half-game out of the AL Wild Card chase, and Rays open the second half Friday with a split doubleheader at Fenway Park.

In 34 games this season, Chapman posted 19 saves, improving his 17-year total to 386. He's five shy of surpassing Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley for ninth on the all-time saves list.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone explained why a public apology never materialized.

"At the end of the day, he wasn't at the workout," Boone said, as reported by MLB.com

Will the grudge keep Chapman from returning to the Yankees?

Or has the Red Sox's pre-All-Star break winning streak taken him off the market?
