The New York Yankees have spent much of the 2026 season searching for outfield stability as injuries and roster turnover have forced the organization to lean heavily on its depth throughout the system.

New York Yankees Move Phenom Outfielder Amid Triple Crown Season

“OF Wilberson De Pena, the Florida Complex League Triple Crown winner, has been promoted to the Tampa Tarpons, the Yankees' Single-A affiliate,” MLB insider Francys Romero reported on X. “De Peña, 19, slashed .367 with 16 home runs and 67 RBIs in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League.”

De Pena’s promotion follows one of the most productive offensive seasons in recent rookie ball history, which follows a high-profile transaction bringing the phenom outfielder to the Yankees.

“Acquired in the deal that sent infielder Oswald Peraza to the (Los Angeles) Angels, De Pena has been a hitting machine in the FCL,” Baseball America’s Josh Norris wrote. “The cherry on top of his season came on June 22, when the outfielder went 6-for-7 with three doubles in his team’s rout of the Tigers. De Pena’s name is all over the FCL leaderboards, and evaluators in the league see a player with the potential for average hittability and power and enough defensive chops to move around the outfield.”

Earning a Florida Complex League Triple Crown while still a teenager is an impressive accomplishment on its own. Combining that production with encouraging scouting reports makes De Pena one of the more intriguing position players in New York's farm system.

The Yankees acquired De Pena as part of the trade that sent Peraza, himself a former top prospect out of town. While fans initially complained that the trade cost the Yankees an important utility player, De Pena’s sudden rise could be changing the narrative.

It also comes as the franchise faces some new questions about the future of its outfield.

While Judge, Stanton and Bellinger see their championship windows starting to close, the team’s promising younger outfielders in Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones have been a bit of a disappointment. If De Pena can continue this trajectory, he may become the franchise’s next great homegrown hope.
