Tom Brady and Bill Belichick put together the most dominant run in modern NFL history, winning six Super Bowls over 20 years in New England. They made the Patriots the absolute standard for winning, but it also started one of the biggest debates in football: who deserves more credit for the dynasty, the coach or the quarterback?
The question came up again on the “New Heights” podcast season finale when Jason Kelce asked Brady about it directly. Kelce called it a "clickbaity" argument that just won't go away, asking, "Is it Bill? Is it Tom? Like who is responsible for the greatest era of success in the history of the NFL?"
Brady faced the question instead of dodging. He called Belichick the "greatest" coach he’s ever seen at getting a team ready to win, and said he wouldn't have wanted to play for anyone else. But then he completely shut down the argument. He said asking who matters more is like asking if a left tackle is more important than a center.
The way Brady looks at it, nobody matters more from Monday to Saturday than the head coach, and nobody matters more on Sunday than the quarterback. Both of them are essential to him and nobody can't replace either one. As he put it, 'Everybody's important. The person who washes the clothes is important."
— New Heights (@newheightshow) July 8, 2026He added,”If you have bad quarterback play, it doesn't matter what else you do. You're not going to win. If you have bad coaching, it doesn't matter how well the players are doing. You're going to lose."
Brady also said the two of them pushed each other to get the best out of one another, calling Belichick "incredible" and adding, "Anyone who played underneath them would say the same thing."
Here, the six-time champion refused to rank himself over the coach who drafted him, and instead reframed the entire argument as pointless.
